THE SCHOOL
Stokes Memorial School, situated amidst the fields of the village of Pujarli, six kilometers from the outskirts of Shimla, is a co-educational day school which caters to a healthy mix of urban and rural students. The school was set up in 2004 with the aim of creating an institution which would avoid the pitfalls of undue pressure and rote learning, while nurturing curiosity and independence in its students.
THE INSPIRATION
The School is named after Shri Satyanand Stokes who came from a distinguished and affluent American family and adopted India and its people as his own. His contribution ranges from working in a leprosy asylum at the age of twenty one, fighting for the rights of the hill people during the begar movement, to being jailed by the British during the Independence movement. He transformed the economy of Himachal Pradesh by the introduction and propagation of apple cultivation in the state. His role as an educationist is less well known. In his early years he ran and financially supported one of the oldest schools in the state. In later years he ran a free school for the local village children on his own estate, which he supported from the earningsfrom his orchard. Mahatma Gandhi described him as “the veritable guide, philosopher and friend of the hill men”.
Our Society has named the school after him in the hope of providing the kind of empowerment which might produce some much-needed independent thinkers and courageous doers.
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Stokes Memorial School is committed to developing a questioning, logical and analytical bent of mind. Conceptual learning is stressed and individual responses encouraged. Formal testing and regular home-work is avoided till class five and builds up slowly thereafter. The aim is to make studies enjoyable and turn students into life-long learners. Moral values are taught only implicitly through daily interactions. Despite having students from very varied social and economic backgrounds, we have seen no discrimination and there is a very encouraging atmosphere of acceptance. The school is secular and does not allow for any display of religion, nor does it impart any religious instruction or prayer.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The school is situated on a five bigha campus and has one large and one smaller playground, as well as an area dedicated to open-air activities. The class rooms are large and airy. There is a well stocked library. We currently have three science laboratories and a computer lab. School timings are from 9:00 A.M. to 3:20 P.M. with a half hour morning break, and a 40 minute long lunch break. The school runs three of its own buses and four chartered government buses to ferry children from Shimla and surrounding areas.
