ACADEMICS
The school believes that the role of education is to help children to learn by themselves. Therefore, right from the beginning, the school gives importance to independence in learning through doing and questioning. In school, children will do small amounts of work but the nature of work emphasizes independent thought, observation and writing. Children unable to cope with class work will be given some extra help after the lunch break. Till class five there will be no homework. In class 4 and 5, students have Prep periods when they are given tasks to do independently. This helps to ready them for when they get homework, as students are expected to do their homework independently, without help from their parents.
EXAMS
The school has tried to remove meaningless stress and competition in academics. Evaluation in SMS is continuously done in class and there are no examinations till class 6. Even after class 6, examinations are treated as an opportunity for students to reflect on their learning and for staff to reflect on their teaching.
EXAMS ARE ORIENTED TOWARDS BETTER STUDIES. STUDY IS NOT ORIENTED TOWARDS GETTING BETTER MARKS.
HOME-HELP
The school has found that with rare exceptions, students perform well without the need for home help in their studies. Teachers can only know how well they have taught if children bring work that they have done independently. Parents who feel that they will need to give their children assistance from home, either to keep children busy or for revision, are advised not to admit their children to SMS.
MONITORING
Parents should monitor the home activities of their children. Children who get homework should be monitored to see if they are submitting incomplete or poor quality homework on a regular basis. For younger students, the amount and quality of T.V. watching should be monitored by parents. Parents should feel comfortable to contact the management to discuss their child’s learning behavior and progress.
DEVELOPMENT
The school focuses on developing many sides to a child’s personality. This is the biggest challenge of education and remains an area where parents can contribute easily, yet often are found to do less than they can for their children. It is important that you contact the school management to find out how aware and open your child is and how you can contribute to his or her development.
In school, we make an effort to expose our students to a broad range of activities and experiences. These include dramatics, poetry, art and craft, debates, guest lectures, sports tournaments, chess tournaments, field trips, cycling, hiking, camping, music and dance. The school has a good collection of library books which increases every year, and endeavors to nurture a love of reading in students from a young age. Students have as much exposure to sports and games as the school infrastructure allowsand the school has maintained a high level of physical fitness among all its students.
Learning Management System
The school has been working on integration of open learning platform known as Moodle in school academics. The school firmly believes that a student must be responsible towards his/her academic growth and to provide for that cause school has ensured an active involvement of the L.M.S. (Moodle) in the overall academic structure. School believes that the involvement of independent learning platforms like Moodle, will help improve the learning experience of the students. Additionally, it will also help teachers to get a clearer insight in to the progress and growth of individual students.
